October 30, 2008
Gastric carcinomas or stomach cancer is digging in roots in greater number of population, especially in men above 40 years residing in Chile, Iceland and Japan.
According to a study the increased gastric cancer in these areas is due to greater intake of food that carries more salt, is smoked and cured. Here we are talking about the most common form of Gastric cancer-adenocarcinomas. It is present at the higher parts of the stomach where it is connected with esophagus . Due to absence of symptoms in the early stages the disease goes unnoticed. The symptoms are often common to other less severe gastric problems.
For example, bloating, gas and feeling of fullness with empty stomach. The basic symptoms for Gastric carcinoma are loss of appetite, blood in vomiting, difficulty in swallowing, odor in breath, unknown weight loss, excessive flatulence and belching.
The risk factor for stomach cancer is higher in people with a family history of gastric carcinoma, chronic atrophic gastritis; people who are more prone to infections, people with blood group A and people with history of pernicious anemia.
There are 4 stages for detection for this dreaded disease. First is the upper GI series which shows the cancer presence. The EGD or esophagogastroduodenoscopy and Biopsy also detect the carcinoma.
The CBC shows anemia (which may or may not be due to gastric cancer). Stool test is also performed.
The treatment includes surgical removal of stomach. This is known as the gastrectomy. This is the only complete cure for the condition although chemotherapy and radiation therapy may also be beneficial.
The treatment is essential as this mat lead to spreading of cancer to other near and distant organs. Unhealthy and dangerous weight loss leading to severe weakness. Another serious problem that arises is ascites. It is a condition in which fluid accumulation is felt constantly in belly.
Since prevention is better than cure, include lots of antioxidants (mangosteen, green tea, strawberries, and vitamin E supplements) in your diet to fight free radicals that elevate the chances of various forms of cancer.
