Dementia is the disease of the central nervous system. It is a condition in which a person is unable to communicate, remember or take care of themselves.

It basically occurs due to damage caused to nerve cells. It may occur accidently or due to genetic factors. Those with family history must consume nervine tonics as an act of prevention.

Dementia has wide range of symptoms to suggest. It starts with recent loss of memory. Person may altogether forget recent actions. Such people also suffer from choosing wrong words when they actually are thinking of something else.

They have difficulty in conversation and can not express themselves effectively in language. Most common sign is that they forget where they lived or where they were going. They can not understand their own actions. They can not take decision s and lack in judgment.

People with dementia have trouble during abstract thinking. They can not keep records. They lack the concentration to be able to do same task for a period of time. They forget things and often lose them. They simply forget where they had parked the car.

It must be understood that when you yourself realize about the early symptoms you must consult a physician.

Some studies show that drinking beer, wine and distilled spirits in moderation may prevent dementia. According to a research there has been seen some connection between high blood pressure and development of dementia.

Acetyl cholinesterase inhibitors are used to treat dementia. These include chemicals rivastigmine, donepezil and tacrine. N methyl D aspartate blockers are the second class of drugs for dementia.

Broadly, dementia is of two types -cortical dementia and subcortical dementia. Alzheimer’s disease, Alchohol induced dementia fall under the category of cortical dementia.

Deficiency of Vitamin B12 and B1, Dementia of Huntington’s disease fall under the category of Subcortical dementias. When taking medication for dementia, Antipsychotic drugs must be avoid as they aggravate the risk death due to dementia driven psychosis.
