Inflammed Breasts

Mastitis (inflammation of breasts) is the term given to an infection in the breast.

Causes

It is an infection in the tissues of the breast which is mainly caused when a women is on breast-feeding. It is mainly caused by bacteria which enters the women breast through baby’s mouth through milk duct. Women can develop mastitis even after menopause and also if she is suffering from breast cancer. Diabetes and some immune disorders can also lead to mastitis.

Symptoms

There is pain in the breast, nipples get cracked, redness appears in the infected area and temperature of the breast also increases. It makes you dull and exhausted.

Precautions

One should take some precautions to avoid mastitis. When on breast-feeding some blockage can restrict the milk flow and a lump is formed. Always watch your breasts on a regular basis to notice any change. Massage the lump and take hot bath. Always feed the baby at a fixed schedule. Never stop feeding as this would result in collection of milk in the breast which can cause pain and can also lead to mastitis.

Some breast ointments are also there in the market. Apply them after the feeding. This would help in keeping the nipples lubricated and they would not dry.

Treatment

In mastitis only one breast is infected at a time. Before knowing that you have some breast infection you would feel that you have some flu like symptoms. Some antibiotics would be given by the doctor.

Some simple home remedies are there by which you could reduce the pain and redness. Cabbage leaf is very effective in treating mastitis. Place a leave on your breast while lying down or place it in your bra. Massage the sore spot and place a warm towel on the breast this would give you relief. Take rest this is very important.

Castor oil helps in treating inflammation and pain. Drink lot of water or alfa- alfa juice. After breastfeeding always wipe your nipples. Do not let milk to be left on it and dry as it may also causes infection.
