Inability to Reach Orgasm

June 12, 2009

Inability to reach orgasm (or Anorgasmia) is a condition in which a man or a woman does not experience orgasm during sexual intercourse. This condition is a common cause for sexual frustration. It is more common in females than in males. The disorder is of two types; primary and secondary.

Primary anorgasmia means the person has never experienced orgasm through any means. This category accounts for about 10% of population and is rarely found in men. To achieve the first orgasm, self-stimulation is recommended.

Secondary anorgasmia is loss of ability to attain orgasm. The person may experience the orgasmic periods sometimes. The disorders of desire arousal mechanism may result in such condition.

In females, the sexual stimulation must be sufficiently long enough and intense so as to allow an orgasm. Almost 50% of women do not experience orgasm through penile thrust alone but require manual stimulation of the clitoral part also. Orgasm is under voluntary control and may even be inhibited involuntarily. In males, anorgasmia is often related to delayed ejaculation.

It is found that most of the cases of anorgasmia are related to psychological issues. However, there may also be certain underlying causes for the development of such a condition. These include diabetic neuropathy, complications of genital surgery (particularly prostatectomy), pelvic trauma, hormonal imbalance, cardiovascular disease, alcoholism, menopause, erectile dysfunction and use of anti-depressants etc. Some idiopathic cases are also reported.

There may be certain cases where a person gets an orgasm from a particular type of stimulation or a specific partner only. These conditions are not classified as anorgasmia but are rather variations in the normal sexual expressions.

Treatment is dependent upon the cause and includes sensory stimulation and decreasing involuntary self-inhibition. Psychiatric counseling and communication training form an effective way out in most of the cases. Treatment has a success rate of almost 90%.
