Sight is a precious gift of god to us, but most of us take our eyes for granted. We can and we should take care of our valuable possession. If we follow some of the easy ways of eye care in day-to-day life, we can do a lot for them.
The vision can be anyhow corrected by the aid of glasses or contacts but these can never improve one’s eyesight. Certain natural ways of improving vision include some changes in lifestyle and diet.
Today, most of us work on computers, which causes eye fatigue, discomfort and dry eyes. This is usually because of bad lighting and the way we sit in front of the computer. Eyestrain causes irritation in the eyes and difficult focusing. Eyes close slightly while staring at the screen, thereby minimizing fluid evaporation and leading to dry eye.
Few changes while working in front of the monitor can prevent eyestrain. The computer screen should always be placed around 20 inches away, below the eye level. A document holder should be placed close enough so that constant moving of the head is not required to adjust the focus.
One must place glare filters over the screen. Adjustable keyboard, screen (tilt able) and chair are also helpful tools.
We must not look at the bright objects directly (e.g. car headlights) and not allow the eyes to rest in one place for long. If a light source is required for working, we should use dim light. Also, while moving from darkness to light or vice versa, we must keep an eye closed and the other open.
Avoiding being in dry, air-conditioned air for long hours is advisable, as it sucks the moisture from the eyes (like a sponge). Although, if required to be in such an environment, sunglasses are a must wear. Also, regular exercises helps decrease the intraocular pressure, thereby decreasing the chances conditions like glaucoma.
Dietary advice for improving vision includes intake of carrots (natural source of beta carotene), bilberries and spinach (natural sources of lutein), blueberries (one of the richest fruit forms of antioxidants), red onions (contain quercetin, an antioxidant that protects against cataracts), fish (rich in omega-3 fatty acids) or fish-oil supplements and sweet potatoes (rich in vitamin A).
Try out these simple ways to improve vision and help your eyes see the colourful world forever!
