Importance of pH Balance in the Body
It is important to maintain an alkaline pH of the body. This is due to several metabolic functions the cells keep producing waste which needs to be neutralized in order to restore health of the entire body.These wastes are acidic in nature. An imbalance in the ratio increases risk of chronic diseases like stroke and osteoporosis because the cells will start utilizing the alkaline nutrients from within the body.
Example, to replenish requirement of calcium the cells may start absorbing it from the heart, disturbing its normal functioning.
Cause of Imbalance
Use of medicinal drugs like NSAIDs, recreational drugs like marijuana and cocaine and alcohol disturb the balance significantly because many minerals are lost in their metabolism. Nutrients are lost even due to excess sweating.
A diet which is high in protein and deficiency in other nutrients may also cause pH disturbance. This is especially common with body builders. They are highly recommended to take multivitamin supplements.
Symptoms
Early fatigue, heartburn, flatulence, indigestion, frequent headache and a sour stomach are common symptoms of over-acidity of the body.
Dealing with Acidity
You will need to avoid refined grains, refined sugars, processed meats, uncooked pulses, caffeine, soft drinks and tobacco.
Eat those foods with high pH. Foods that are alkaline in nature are almonds, fresh coconut, watercress, water melon, parsley, carrots, fresh peas, garlic, asparagus and chestnuts.
The saliva is alkaline in pH. The food must be chewed for a much longer time than usual in order to stimulate production of amylase. The digestive enzyme is alkaline in nature. Drink plenty of water. Try drinking fresh fruit or vegetable juices. Additionally, they have a detoxifying effect.
Drink small amount of apple cider vinegar by diluting in small amount of water. This reduces acidity of the meals. Epsom salt is a good source of magnesium sulphate, which can be absorbed by the dermis layer. Hence, take bath with the salt once in a week.
Stress aggravates acid content in the body. Breathing exercises and medication are extremely helpful in reducing stress of the mind and body.
Herbal Options
Herbal teas such as green tea, rosemary and ashwagandha should be consumed with afternoon meals. Cayenne pepper and seaweed agar agar are equally helpful.
