Hypothyroidism
In our body we have a thyroid gland located at the base of our neck. This butterfly shaped gland is located around the windpipe. It produces thyroid hormones that regulate our body metabolism and energy levels.
Hypothyroidism is a hypometabolic state when body produces insufficient thyroid hormones for a long period or when the body tissues are resistant to the effects of the thyroid hormones produced.
In infants and children, thyroid hormones are needed for normal growth and development. Development of hypothyroidism in this age group is called congenital hypothyroidism (or cretinism). During pregnancy mother should take special care of her thyroid levels as it effects the brain development of the baby.
In adults, this clinical condition is termed as myxoedema. The condition is more common in women and increases with increasing age.
There are many problems related to hypothyroidism. Though, these may be present differently in different patients. Striking features are weight gain and water retention. Other symptoms include abnormal menstrual cycle, cold hands and feet, irritability, brittle nails, depression, sleepiness, lethargy, constipation, slow speech, dry hair and skin, memory loss, loss of hair, puffiness of face, muscle cramps and many more.
Hypothyroidism can be confirmed by measuring thyroid hormones in the blood. In some cases the diagnosis is difficult, so consulting an endocrinologist becomes necessary.
If left untreated hypothyroidism can be harmful. It may lead to thyroid cancer, heart failure, heart enlargement or even coma. Early thyroid cancer has no symptoms. The earliest symptoms are presence of a swelling in the thyroid gland, difficulty speech, difficulty in swallowing followed by pain. Hypothyroidism is even linked to cancer of liver and ovary.
Some modifications in your dietary habits can reduce hypothyroidism such as eating natural food, fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain and lean protein. Eat small meals at frequent intervals and reduce meat intake. Try to loose your weight.
Remember that hypothyroidism is a common and easily treatable condition!
