When summers arrive, they bring with them high temperatures, dry weather and common health problems like sunstroke. Sunstroke is a condition when the human body can no longer maintain the normal body temperature. This condition occurs due to excessive exposure to high temperatures which cause the failure of the body’s heat regulating system.
The normal human body temperature is 37 degree Celsius. Due to hot weather, the body temperature also increases. The body can easily adjust to a temperature of up to 40 degree Celsius, but when it exceeds that range, a person feels dizzy, weak and often vomits. He experiences severe headache and sometimes even loses consciousness.
Home remedies to deal with sunstroke
Since dehydration is one of the causes of sunstroke, it is better to keep the body hydrated by drinking lots of liquids. One may consume plain water, juices, or even a solution of sugar and water. Enough quantity of liquid in the body will keep the body cool even in the extreme temperatures and prevent the occurrence of sunstroke.
If the patient loses his consciousness due to sunstroke, immediately transfer him to a cool place that is properly ventilated and provides a cooler environment. Try to remove excess clothes or accessories such as wrist watch or belt from the body of the patient. Only keep such clothes on the body which are loose enough for the air to ventilate.
Apply ice packs to the body to reduce the body temperature. Drink a solution consisting of raw mango extract mixed with water, salt and sugar. If raw mangoes are not available then give the patient some jaggery to suck. After 5 minutes give him normal water to drink. This remedy helps in removing the excess heat from the body within 5 minutes and provides immediate relief.
Along with these remedies, the patient should also follow some dietary restrictions. Onions and garlic must be included in the diet of a patient suffering from sunstroke. Avoid foods item that are rich in carbohydrates. Instead consume such items which are rich in fiber and potassium. Avoid alcohol, smoking and exercises until you feel better. Take complete bed rest for about 2 days to cure sunstroke completely.
