The first thing that comes to our mind when we see someone scratching their head repeatedly is – lice. It is an irritating condition which usually occurs in children. Lice are tiny parasitic insects which reside in the head and stay alive by sucking blood from the scalp.

No matter how much care you take of yourself, but the children can easily get infected with lice from their friends. And once they get infected, they pass it on to the other family members, which can be a serious worry for all.

The best way to control lice is by detecting it early. Common symptoms include an itchy scalp, occurrence of red bumps on the scalp or neck, lice moving on the scalp and constant scratching of head. But it is very important to remember that though lice appear white in color, not everything that appears white in the head can be lice. It can also be the presence of dandruff. So be certain that it is lice and then apply the treatment.

Home remedies for lice

The simplest home remedy to get rid of lice is using a lice comb. It is a special comb in which the teeth of comb are nearer to one another which help in cleaning the lice from the scalp. Once the lice are removed from the scalp, make sure you kill them or they will move around and infect someone else.

Also kill the nits and the eggs that come out as they might hatch and create more lice. This remedy is time consuming as combing needs to be done regularly to ascertain complete removal of lice.

Other natural treatments include using olive oil, vinegar, mayonnaise, vaseline, rosemary oil, etc. Apply any of these products to the head and let it stay overnight. You may wear a shower cap to prevent spreading of the lice on the bed. In the morning wash off the hair with plain water and see the effect. If lice are still present, repeat this procedure.

To achieve good results, it is important to differentiate lice from other white stuff appearing in the head. The home remedies are simple to implement, but if they do not provide results, consult a dermatologist and get some medicated shampoos and medicines.
