Home Remedies for Jaundice

Bilirubin is the substance present in the blood that carries oxygen in the red blood cells. When these red blood cells break down, new ones are formed and the old ones are processed in the liver.

If the liver has some problem and it is not able to process the old cells, the bilirubin builds up in the body. As this bilirubin is yellow in colour, its excessive presence in the body makes the colour of skin and other membranes look yellow, including eyes. This situation is called jaundice.

Reasons of jaundice are many. It can happen if there is any blockage in the bile ducts, some infection, presence of any liver disease, some blood disease and also intake of some medicines.

Small babies develop jaundice very easily as their liver is still developing and is not able to remove the excess of bilirubin and also because the newborns produce more of bilirubin than adults. If not treated timely, it can lead to major complications.
