Home Remedies For Hiccups

May 20, 2009

Hick! … Hick! This is the annoying sound that results when hiccups occur to an individual. Hiccups occur due to irritation in the diaphragm because of irregular passage of air in the lungs.

The hiccups last for several minutes and slowly disappear as the breathing becomes normal. But sometimes, hiccups occur at such a time that we cannot bear them and need some remedies to cure them immediately.

But before discussing the remedies to cure hiccups, let’s see what the causes of hiccups are. The most common causes are drinking alcohol, smoking, eating spicy food and eating food too fast.

Apart from this, one can have hiccups if he overstretches his neck, experiences irritation in throat or he is a patient of diabetes. Now you know the causes and the best way to avoid hiccups is by avoiding the factors that cause them. But if you still experience hiccups, then you should try these simple home remedies.

Keep drinking water after every 2 minutes. You may even try sucking ice as it will provide immediate relief. Gargling with lukewarm water will also deliver good results. Ginger has been known for many medicinal purposes and it shows its importance in curing hiccups as well. Cut small pieces of ginger and keep them on your tongue. The juice of ginger will sooth the throat reducing irritation, if any and provides relief.

One of the effective ways to stop hiccups is to divert your mind by engaging into any activity. You may listen to music or watch television or play around or do anything that diverts your mind. Licking crystalline sugar can be a good remedy and so can drinking pineapple juice.

If your hiccups do not stop after following these tips and you feel extreme pain in your throat, probably you may have developed a chronic hiccup which is a serious health issue. In such case, consulting your physician will be the best way to tackle this problem as prolonging medical consultation can cause ulcers, heart attacks and even lung cancer.
