There are certain herbs that need to be present in home even if they are non-culinary in nature. Before we disclose which herbs one must always keep at home let us understand the precautions which need to be taken while dealing with these herbs.

One must never take herbal remedies during pregnancy or during lactation unless these are prescribed by the health care provider. Dose directions are given on label of all herbal medicines. Remember never to exceed the dose recommended by the manufacturer.

Conventional medicines usually do not go with herbal remedies. Therefore, consult the physician/health care provider before starting any herbal medicine. Nevertheless there are certain herbs that can be used in common health problems.

Long term internal use of garlic reduces cholesterol and has shown to strengthen the immune system. It has been used superficially as anti-fungal agent. Fresh use of garlic must be avoided on mucous membranes. It may cause local irritation or ulceration.

Aloe vera finds its use in healing burns, eczema, skin irritation and other skin problems. Early morning consumption of a small piece of aloe vera can heal inflammation of the digestive tract. High doses may lead to diarrhoea.

Horsetail is a great source of silica and zinc. The herb is used to control bleeding by herbalists. It has a mild diuretic action and is thus helpful in treating certain prostate conditions. As an herbal supplement, it is said to strengthen hair, bones and teeth.

Kelp is easily available in market and is prepared using several varieties of seaweed. It is a rich source of vitamin B3, B2, riboflavin, chlorine and iodine. Because of the iodine content it is used in treatment of goiter.

It is a good daily supplement for those working in industries where there is risk of absorption of heavy metals by the body. Kelp is able to protect body against absorption of metals like cadmium and mercury. It even has anti-rheumatic properties.

St John`s wort is well known for anti-depression properties and is used to treat nervous system exhaustion. Regular use of this herb may make the skin sensitive to sunlight. The fresh herb should not be touched as it may cause skin eruptions.
