Having Irregular Periods?

October 27, 2009

It is a myth that every women needs to have a menstrual cycle of 28 days because every women has her own menstrual cycle. Genes, body type and play of hormones in women primarily regulate for how many days and after how many weeks a woman menstruates.

The point is to have a regular cycle. Also, there is no hard and fast rule that periods need to occur for 5 days. Bleeding for 3 to 7 days is normal.

It is when this regular cycle gets disturbed for month’s together, irregular periods are said to occur. Many women start menstruating more frequently and others may experience delayed periods.

Complications

Stress, hormonal disturbance and certain health conditions lead to irregular periods. Development of Inflammatory bowel disease is a common cause of irregular periods. Symptoms of this disease are weight loss, diarrhea and pain in the abdominal area. If left untreated, it may become worse leading to hospitalization.

A main cause of irregular periods is PCOD or poly cystic ovarian disorder. In this cysts are produced in the ovaries and hence block the pathway. Excess pain during bleeding, excessive growth of hair on the body, weight gain, and dandruff are main symptoms of PCOD. If left ignored, PCOD can lead to ovarian cancer, cardiovascular diseases and endometriosis.

Fibroids, bulimia nervosa, PMS and anorexia nervosa are also common causes to consider. Emotional stress, recent abortion or breast feeding are not very serious factors to cause irregular menses but they can not be ignored either.

Sudden weight gain or weight loss itself may become a critical cause of irregular periods. This is because the natural balance of the hormones gets disturbed due to sudden change in body. Therefore, women must not indulge in over-exercising.

A diet low in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals and high in carbohydrates significantly effects the monthly cycle. Excess consumption of caffeine, alcohol and tobacco lead to irregular periods. More significantly, they may become cause of infertility.

If one year has gone without periods one must consult doctor. Also, in case of painful periods, excessive mood swings, heavy bleeding, nausea and dizziness the doctor must be consulted right away.

It is important to have regular periods. These represent proper functioning of the body and fertility of the women.
