Diet plays a very important role for healthy hair. Most of the hair problems are due to deficiency of one or more essential vitamins and minerals. Crash dieting deprives body of basic nutrients. Hair and nails are primary suffer of lack of nutrition.
All the B-vitamin family is very important for hair growth. A standard dose of 150 mg of niacin, 300 mg of vitamin B5 and 150 mg of vitamin B6 is necessary to provide optimal nutrition to hair. Natural source of the vitamin B-complex family are peas, carrots, soy beans, nuts, eggs and cauliflower.
Vitamin E is a strong antioxidant. It has the ability to take up oxygen and improve circulation in the scalp. It increases growth of hair, avoid occurrence of split ends. This vitamin can be taken in dose of 400 IU everyday.
Vitamin C improves circulation in the scalp and boosts hair growth in addition to other vitamins. This vitamin is necessary to keep functioning of vessels that supply blood to the hair follicles. Hair needs 3000 to 10000 mg of vitamin C every day. Gooseberry powder can be applied on hair in the form of paste with curd every week. It is one of the richest sources of vitamin C. Lemons, oranges, blueberries; raspberries are all good source of vitamin C.
Biotin deficiency is cause of baldness in many men and women. Usually 150 mg of biotin is required everyday. The dose can be divided in three portions (50 mg) and taken three times in a day. Natural sources of biotin are soybeans, walnuts, brown rice and green peas. Inositol is also vital for healthy hair. 200 mg of Inositol must be consumed daily.
Taking Care
Apart from nutrition some basic hair care rules must be remembered. If your hair are falling then do not put extra pressure on them. Do not tie tight braids.
Use of certain hair accessories may put extra pressure on hair. Use of color should be minimal on weak hair. Also, make sure that the color that you use does not carry any peroxide chemical. Avoid washing your hair with chlorinated water or salt water.
