Gall Bladder Pain
July 2, 2009
Gall bladder is an organ in the body, which assists in the liver activity. It stores the bile produced by the liver and passes it to the small intestine. Bile is very important for digesting fat.
Causes
Gall bladder pain is very severe and can be due to various causes. Mainly gall bladder stones are the basic cause for the pain, which is mainly caused after consuming food rich in fat and can last for several hours. The pain starts from the middle of the stomach and sometimes goes to the back and ends below the right shoulder.
Stones in the gall bladder can cause inflammation, which results in pain due to blockage in the duct. Sometimes the stone gets struck in the bile duct. If the pain is due to presence of stone, then the person would feel severe pain in the upper right abdomen, which may even reach the back. The person can also have fever, vomiting or nausea, hypotension and dark coloured urine.
Another cause of such pain can be pain in the right side of the abdomen with cramps radiating to epigastrium, which is caused by eating some wrong foods.
Gall bladder pains are also common during and after pregnancy. As the hormones produced during this time restrict the bladder to work properly, the bile present in it gets more concentrated and forms a stone. Overweight women are more prone to gall bladder diseases.
The pain in the gall bladder is not always due to stone. Inflammation caused due to problem in the muscles of gall bladder is called Biliary Dyskinesia.
