Foods to Avoid During Pregnancy
Being pregnant is a time when you and your baby need an extra of everything. This includes extra care, extra nutrition, and extra healthy life-style.
But there are certain foods which must be avoided or taken in limited amounts in order to prevent any from of complications. We all know side effects of excess caffeine.
Right? But for pregnant women things may get more serious. If an expecting mother consumes more than 200 mg of caffeine a day it might result in miscarriage. Since caffeine interferes with absorption of iron in body, which is essential for production of hemoglobin, chances are baby be born weak. 200 mg of caffeine is equivalent to 2 cup of tea a day.
Drinking of alcohol must be completely stopped during pregnancy. Slight drinking harms development of the baby. Heavy drinking leads to alcohol syndrome. Occasional bottoms-up must be avoided at all costs.
Although sea foods are good source of Omega 3 fatty acids which acts are extraordinary antioxidants, there are certain fishes that must be avoided during pregnancy. These include swordfish, marlin and shark. Even if you are eating other fishes, the consumption must not be more than 2 portions of oily fish once a week.
These include trout, sardines, mackerel and tuna. Additionally, tuna has high quantities of mercury. Therefore it is better to be avoided. Whatever multivitamin and mineral supplements that you take during pregnancy you must make sure that it does not carry too much of vitamin A content. In foods, cod liver oil and liver contains high quantities of vitamin A.
Part from these specific foods, a pregnant women must make sure that she eats only well washed and well cooked meals, If eggs are being included in your meals then they must be cooked until both whites and yolks is hard. Special care for eating barbeque must be taken since unclean utensils only add dangerous bacteria.
