Remedies

Make natural diuretics part of your daily consumption. Cranberry juice, cabbage, carrots and tomatoes are powerful natural diuretics. Tomatoes and lettuce contain vitamin C (antioxidant) which helps in expulsion of excess water from the kidneys. Carotenoids that are present in carrots perform the same function of excreting excess water and toxins from the body.

Cabbage, eaten raw, helps in breakdown of fatty deposits. It is also known as a fat burner food. Oats contains silica which is a natural diuretic.

Eat fennel seed after meals. These have diuretic properties. Likewise, green tea, dandelions leaf tea, nettle can be consumed as tea. Additionally these help in detoxification of body.

Ice packs work well in reducing swelling around the ankles due to fluid retention. But this is a temporary remedy. Diabetic patients should consult physician before using ice packs.

Vitamins

Taking a multi-vitamin mineral supplement is vital in fluid retention. Vitamin A and C have shown to expel excess water from the body. Consume citrus fruits and green vegetables for natural sources of these vitamins. Potassium too helps. It is found in significant amounts in bananas.

Taking Care

Avoid excess intake of salt and sugary products. Also, avoid consuming empty calories. Instead of 3 large meals take 5 to 6 small meals. Drink ample amount of water. It may sound ironical but water helps flushing of water better. So, make sure that you consume 1.5 to 2 liters of water everyday.

Whenever possible, raise the level of your legs to improve circulation.  Exercise regularly. Certain workouts are more beneficial than others.  Tell your instructor that you are trying to lose weight due to fluid retention. They will be able to suggest you better exercises to get rid of fluid retention. Cycling, lifting of legs (as in some yoga positions) is very helpful.

Quit smoking and restrict alcohol intake.  Take herbal teas as an alternative to sugary drinks/refreshments. Stay away from junk food and include a serving of salad or freshly cut fruits everyday.
