Facts About Vitamin Supplements

June 30, 2009

The human body functions due to a series of continuous metabolic activities. To carry out these activities day in and day out, the body requires a regular intake of nutrients.

The nutrients consist of the required vitamins and minerals that help in the normal functioning of the body organs. The natural sources of vitamins and minerals include fruits and vegetables which contain ample quantity of the nutrients. But some people avoid that and consume pills instead.

The pills act as a replacement for the natural sources of vitamins. Offered referred as vitamin supplements, these pills are very popular among people and consumed on a large scale. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) reported that annually people spend billions of dollars on mineral and vitamin supplements.

Although consuming vitamin supplements is beneficial and helps the body to get its required dosage of nutrients, there are some facts that you should be aware of. There are 13 different type of vitamins and our body needs all of them in different quantity. Therefore consuming only one type of vitamin supplement will not help at all.

Also, while purchasing the vitamin supplements, one should be careful enough to buy them only from reputed manufacturers. Many times, there are some local manufacturers who claim that their pills are very effective and offer lucrative discounts. And due to such marketing gimmicks, many people purchase those below average supplementary pills and complain about its ineffectiveness later on. Therefore, invest your money intelligently and buy only reputed vitamin supplements.

One should also be careful about the dosage of the vitamin supplements. Often people have a wrong notion and consume more than required quantity of the supplements. Instead of having a positive effect, this over consumption backfires and causes unwanted conditions.

The vitamin supplements are made up of many components and not vitamins, therefore over consumption of them can have toxic effect on the body. Also, the fat soluble vitamins are stored in liver and over a period of time can lead to liver damage as they are only being stocked in the body and not utilized by the body.

It is better to consume natural resources for providing essential nutrients to the body. But if you happen to use the vitamin supplements instead, keep these facts in mind and lead a healthy life.
