Eyestrain Can Be Managed

When a person has discomfort in viewing something like burning, watering double vision, headache, tightness or pain in the eyes, then it is described as eyestrain. Any muscle in the body when held for long in one position can strain out. Likewise when an eye muscle is over worked then eyestrain occurs.

Causes of Eyestrain

Eyestrain can occur while reading book, working on computer continuously for long period of time, watching television for long and at a less distance. Sometimes eyestrain can be the sign that one needs spectacles. If eyesight is becoming weak then also eyestrain occurs. Sometimes insufficient light is also the cause for eyestrain.

Eyestrain caused by computers is a very common cause nowadays. This is because the colour of the screen and the characters in it differ and as you see them, the light reflected does not allow the brain to give the correct images and hence eye strain occurs.

How to Avoid Eyestrain

The best and simple way to avoid eyestrain is to give some rest to the eyes in between your work. Give rest to your eyes by not looking at the work you are doing. Also wash the eyes with cold water. This feels very relaxing. Always go out in natural light for sometime. While sitting you can do some eye exercises like rolling the eyes, stretching and squeezing.

While working on computer for long, change your focus for few minutes so that your eyes can relax. Keep hands on the eyes for few minutes as this also relaxes your eyes. Blinking rapidly moistens the eyes and hence reduces the strain.

Use eye drops to moisten your eyes. Good lightning in the room where you view television, study or work on computer is good for your eyes. Always watch television from a good distance to avoid eyestrain.
