Eliminating Breast Discomfort

Many women experience cyclic breast discomfort every month. There are different terms used to define the condition– fibrocystic breasts, cyclical breast pain, cyclical mastaglia and cyclical mastitis.
Knowing Your Breasts
Self examination of breasts is very important. Observe your breasts closely in front of the mirror. Raise your arms and see the area below the breasts. Observe well if any area of the breast is sensitive to touches or feels painful.
You should also look for any lump on the breasts or in the armpits. In case of any dimple around the breast area or any reddish area visit the doctor immediately. The best time to examine one’s breasts is just after the periods are over.
Treatment
The drugs used usually regulate production of prolactin. High levels of these hormones significantly causes breast discomfort. The hormone levels are high in breast feeding women.
Contraceptive pills may be suitable for some women but may make the symptoms worse in others. Also, pills seem to top the charts in terms of side-effects. The side-effects include weight fluctuation, depression, changes in sex derive, headache, thrombosis and breast tenderness.
Danazol, the weak male hormone suppresses the cycle and stops ovulation. The substance is known to have serious side effects like rashes, nausea, dizziness, and headaches. It is prescribed only if necessary.
GnRH analogues may also be prescribed. These put the body in the state of temporary menopause. But hot flashes, vaginal dryness and mood swings are the most common side effects with these drugs.
Role of Diet
A diet low in fats helps in reducing breast discomfort. But this does not mean that one should avoid fat completely. It is important to eat “healthy fat” found in nuts, fish and vegetables oils to maintain good health of breasts.
Avoid all those substances which contain methlyxanthines (caffiene, theobromines and theobromines). These are present in chocolates, black tea, green tea, coffee, decaffeinated coffee and cola.
A diet rich in vitamin E, B-complex vitamins and fiber is found to be beneficial for breasts. Many expect believe that there is a link between persistent constipation and breast discomfort. If daily meals do not provide the complete nutrition then supplements can be taken.
