Effects of Alcohol

July 3, 2009

Drinking alcohol gives pleasure to people, but at the same time they are affecting their body. As you drink alcohol, the body directly absorbs it, as it does not need time to get digested. When it reaches the stomach, the alcohol dehydrogenate enzymes present there absorb the maximum alcohol and prevent it from entering the blood stream.

As this enzyme is present in small quantities in women, they get out of order after consuming even lesser amount of alcohol. After being readily absorbed by the small intestine, it reaches liver where it is to be oxidized. In the liver, alcohol is first oxidized into fatty acids. Before this conversion, alcohol has to get accumulated in the liver and thereby changes the cell structure of the liver causing a clinical condition called fatty liver.

Effects on the Body

Alcohol consumption raises the blood pressure, builds-up lipids in the blood i.e. high cholesterol which causes heart diseases and stroke in heavy drinkers compared to light drinkers.

As alcohol contains sugars and carbohydrates, it increases your weight also and more problems with increased weight.

Alcohol affects the brain part that controls the behavior and emotions, so when one drinks more, he talks like fools. Regular drinkers do not eat properly and hence are deprived of the necessary nutrients. It reduces the brain tissues and increases the size of the ventricles.

Regular drinking also affects your skin by making the blood vessels in the skin to widen up. This allows more blood flow which produces flushed colour of the skin and one feels warm.

Sex life is also affected by drinking. In men it can cause loss of erection and in women drinking during pregnancy can harm the baby.

Liver is the worst affected organ by drinking excess of alcohol. Central nervous system is also affected by making a person depressed and high levels of alcohol consumption can even result in coma and death.

Keep in Mind

Whenever you drink, keep in mind not to sit and drink. Try to keep on roaming, as this will help you to drink less. Also, drink only when you want to, do not drink by force and always eat something while drinking. Remember not to drink too much and also try to avoid it at times.
