Eczema Care
Eczema is a skin disorder which affects both children and adults. Though it is usually found to be a hereditary problem but it may occur in any individual. Eczema is characterized by occurrence of reddish cuts of the skin that itch. The itching worsens the eczema, turning it into a thick layer of skin.The appearance of eczema may vary from person to person. It can affect any part of the body but face, legs, neck, scalp and forearms are typically affected.
Things to Remember
Eczema may become aggravated due to certain substances or environmental factors. Recognize them and avoid them completely. Bathe with neither hot water nor with cold water.
Bathe only with warm water. Hot/cold water will increase itching and make the eczema worse.
Sweating is good for the skin but it will worsen the eczema. Avoid hot places. Likewise, avoid visiting places that are too cold and dry. A pleasant weather helps in healing of the eczema.
Cleanliness is absolutely essential. Make sure the surroundings are clean. Do not clean it yourself because the dust will act as an allergen and increase itching.
Self Care
Steam baths are extremely helpful for eczema patients. They can be taken 3 times in a day for one week. The heat helps in killing of the germs and improves blood circulation. Thus, the skin underneath is encouraged to rejuvenate itself. Sun bath offers similar benefits.
Use only cotton cloths and carry cotton handkerchiefs and towels. Always pat dry the skin and do not rub it.
Avoid use of commercial soaps to clean the area. Use only dermatologically approved soaps/ lotions for cleansing.
Follow a strict diet regime in which ginger, cashews, oranges, watermelon, cucumber, radish, ladies finger and papaya are forbidden. Such foods carry high mineral content which is not suitable for eczema.
Supplementation of zinc is helpful in healing the skin.
Home Remedies
Prepare warm solution of garlic by mixing half cup of hot water with one freshly mashed clove of the spice. Soak a cotton ball in this solution and apply on the area.
Drinking tea prepared from basil leaves purifies the blood. 2-3 cups of the tea can be consumed every day. The solution of basil can be applied on the eczema to kill the bacteria.
