Don’t Panic In Epistaxis

Epistaxis is nothing but a term for nose bleeding. Bleeding from inside the nose is an emergency situation which can frighten the patient as well as the attendant.

Epistaxis Causes

There could be several reasons for the same. Sometimes children may prick the inside of the nose with nails, some accident to the inner of the nose may cause bleeding, some viral infection could also be the cause and acute sinusitis is also a known cause for nose bleeding. Sometimes change in the weather like moving to high altitudes can also cause the nose to bleed.

Certain diseases like hypertension, some heart diseases, pregnancy, some acute infection like typhoid, malaria, dengue, measles and some bleeding disorder in the person can also make the nose bleed.

Home remedies for Epistaxis

There is no need to get panic and you can stop the bleeding nose easily at home itself. Whenever nose starts to bleed just lean forward and sit down. Let the blood come out rather then going inside the nose. If you lean backward the blood would go in the mouth which may cause nausea and vomiting.

Apple cider vinegar also helps stop the bleeding. Dip a cotton ball in it and press it inside the nostrils slowly. This would help the blood to congeal. Putting a drop of lemon juice in the nostril and a wet towel on the head also helps.

If bleeding does not stop in 15 to 20 minutes then you must consult the doctor. If the bleeding is due to an injury or your nose bleeds very frequently then also consult the doctor rather trying your remedies.

Keeping a cold pack or ice on the bridge of the nose would also help in stopping the bleeding. Pinching the nose for sometime can also stops the bleeding.

In children mainly pricking in the nose causes bleeding. To avoid this trim the nails of your children regularly.

Hypertension in old age also causes nose to bleed, so always take the medicine to control your blood pressure. Smoking also makes the nose dry and can cause bleeding. Never sneeze with closed mouth always open the mouth.
