Does Your Child Grind Teeth?

September 30, 2009

Bruxism is the term given to grinding and clenching of teeth. Children below the age of five mainly suffer from this problem. But this is not a state of worry. With the age it goes off itself.

It mainly occurs during night and some do it when they are awake like in state of undue stress or due to some anxiety. Some people say that the children whose teeth are not aligned properly also do this.

There is no need to worry as children have milk teeth which when replaced with permanent teeth (which are more aligned), rectify the problem automatically.

Some children complain of jaw pain during morning, headache and ear pain. If this situation increases then some damage could be caused to the jaws. Parents can encourage their children to stop this and indulge them in some other work so that they stop doing this.

Not only children but any person of any age group can suffer from bruxism. As such this is not a disorder but it can completely damage the teeth. Bruxism can be caused when a person is in stress, anger, frustration or in some hurry. The condition of you teeth would tell the extent of the disorder.

Home Remedies

One can try to overcome this problem by doing some simple home remedies. Chew anything like apple, carrot or cauliflower. This would calm your mouth which in turn reduces bruxism.

Sleep straight i.e. on your back. Sleeping on your side or on your stomach maximizes the teeth grinding activity at night.

Drink warm milk at night before going to sleep. Do not drink alcohol as this increases teeth grinding. Add calcium and magnesium supplements in your daily diet.

Try some deep breathing exercises to relax your tired muscles as this would help a lot in overcoming this situation.

Try these simple home remedies for some days regularly and see the changes.
