Diseases From Flies

The flies are source of several fatal diseases. The flies transmit diseases either by biting or acting as agents, carrying bacteria and virus. Here is a briefing about these diseases.

Typhoid fever

It is caused by Salmonella typhi.  The signs and the symptoms include lethargy, diarrhea, pain in different parts of body and decreased appetite. Some people develop fever as high as 40 degree Celsius. Abdominal pain and congestion in chest is rare but may develop.

The symptoms take about 2 weeks to develop and with treatment, the disease can be cured and control within a month and a half.

Cholera

Cholera is caused by bacterium Vibria cholerae. Visibility of symptoms of the infection may vary from patient to patient. Some cases may show no characteristic symptoms at all.

Nevertheless, the symptoms include excessive thirst, dry mouth, dry skin, dehydration, sunken eyes, low blood pressure and rapid heart beat. Nausea, vomiting and disturbed sleep may also occur.

The signs appear between first and third day of infection. Immediate treatment is necessary or it may lead to death.

Escherichia coli Infection

Symptoms of this infection include vomiting, fever (which does not rise above 101), stomach cramps and diarrhea. These are usually visible within 5 days of infection. In rare cases the signs may take 10 days to be visible.

Shigellosis

It is caused by bacterium Shigella. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, intestinal pain, bloody stools, bloody diarrhea, toxemia and tenesmus.

Leishmaniasis

The infection occurs due to bite by sand flies. It is one of the most fatal infection diseases. Symptoms include enlargement of the spleen, visible hyper pigmentation on abdomen, feet, hand and forehead.

Other symptoms include progressive anemia, malaise and fever. Blood samples of Leishmaniasis patient show low count of RBC, WBC and platelets.

Bartonellosis

Bartonellosis henselae causes infection in humans. Bartonellosis species do not normally cause infection and live harmoniously inside the cells. The disease may remain mild or may become fatal enough to lead to death. Symptoms include loss do appetite, headache, fatigue and fever.

Prevention

Basic hygiene rules must always be followed. Do not consume foods which have been left uncovered for a much longer time. Always wash your hands before eating something.
