Dietary Guide for Prostate Problems

June 30, 2009

Prostate enlargement and prostatitis are two common diseases of the prostate glands. Prostatitis is often followed by a urinary tract infection. The prostate gland becomes inflamed in this disease. In prostate enlargement, the benign tumor multiplies and thus obstructs the path for urination.

Symptoms for both the diseases include difficulty in urination and frequent urination. Pain, often unbearable, is experienced at the base of the penis. Nutrition has a strong hand in occurrence in these diseases.

Consumption of excess refined sugar and other foods, lack of meals rich in vitamins and minerals, excess intake of caffeine and alcohol are some of the major causes of prostate problems. Low intake of antioxidants, increased intake of hydrogenated fats and cadmium deficiency due to tobacco use may lead to the trouble.

Nevertheless, it becomes very important that the diet must be improved. Watermelons, guavas fresh vegetables carry ample amounts of antioxidants which are more than necessary in these diseases. At least one meal daily must be full of these foods. Tomato and the entire citrus family, especially cranberries and blueberries have been scientifically proven to fight well against free radicals.

Drink on 2-3 glasses of red wine with your meals every week. The Resveratrol present in the red wine is known to have anti-cancer properties. You may also consume green tea with your afternoon meals. If you crave for caffeine, choose fruit teas or grain coffees to suffice the craving.

The patient must avoid full-fat dairy products, red meat and refined food product. Harsh wheat fibers like pectin and cellulose must also be avoided.

According to research, prostate problems may arise due to deficiency of zinc and essential fatty acids. Oysters, fish, almonds, all are good sources of zinc and essential fatty acids. You may even choose a supplement that offers amino acid complex which includes almandine, glutamic acid and glycine. In addition to this, Saw palmetto supplement should also be taken in order to improve the flow of the urine.

Drink plenty of water to urinate enough to detoxify the body. Nutrition is a form of natural therapy in addition to the medication given for the disease. In simple words, nutrition may not be the fire but it definitely is the fuel to the fire. Eat well.
