Colour blindness does not mean complete blindness. Colour blindness is a condition in which a person is not able to distinguish some particular colours.
Some people are colour blind for red – green and some for blue – yellow. Out of the two the most common is red and green. Total colour blindness is very rarely seen. Persons who are totally colour blind would have some other problem in their eyes.
Causes
There is no cause for colour blindness and also it is not a symptom or a disease. It is mainly a hereditary problem, which runs in families (males are mostly affected). Also there is no treatment for this but person affected by colour blindness get frustrated because he is not able to the day to day activities.
Colour blindness is caused due to malfunction of retina in the eye. Retina converts light energy into electrical energy, which is transmitted to brain via cones. There are three cones in each eye. When some defect occurs in any one of the three cones then only colour blindness occurs.
Colour blindness is present in the chromosomes. Carrier is mother but males are most commonly affected. Sometimes some problem in the eye or brain can also cause colour blindness.
Symptoms
Person suffering from colour blindness would have difficulty in distinguishing some particular colours, would have blurred vision at times and also would see the objects in shades of grey.

Ophthalmologist’s check for colour blindness by showing the patient a chart made up of coloured dots. If the person is not able to distinguish the colours in the chart then he is stated as color blind.
If colour blindness occurs in childhood itself the child would not be able to use crayons for colouring. He would have problem in distinguishing the colours. In adults, it becomes difficult to buy clothes and also driving becomes dangerous because the person would not be able to see the colours of traffic light.
