Diabetes Lifestyle Tips
Many diabetic patients struggle hard to maintain sugar levels within the limits. They take heavy medication and try many herbal remedies. But there is no alternative to a healthy lifestyle. Here are few simple things that will help diabetic patients to maintain optimal sugar levels in the body forever.
For a normal person, the fasting sugar (before breakfast) must be within 80 to 120. The random blood sugar levels must not exceed 160.
The patient must maintain a daily chart of their blood sugar level. Symptoms of excess blood sugar include increased thirst, dizziness and weakness.
Diet
Never skip meals. In absence of food, sugar levels may fluctuate significantly which may be harmful. Instead of having 3 heavy meals choose 5 small meals throughout the day. This will help you to eat variety in your diet.
Eat food in their natural form. Include fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet. This will provide necessary fiber content to the body.
We can not skip starchy food but there are certain healthy ways of consuming them. Eat boiled potatoes instead of fried version like fried and chips. Prefer baked bread and use mustard spreads or sugar free-jams instead of mayonnaise. If you intend to eat rice do not eat chapatti or pasta. Choose one starch at a time.
Rather than drinking milk consume curds. These are rich source of calcium and easily digested. Diabetic patients have tough time resisting sweet things. In order to satisfy your sweet craving eat fresh fruits like melons, apples, jamuns or go for frozen yogurt desserts.
Exercises and Hygiene
Long walks help to maintain optimal blood sugar levels. Change socks daily. Keep shoes clean. Diabetic patients tend to have skin problems on foot very easily. Keep them clean and check fingers of the feet regularly for any numbness or sores.
In case of any sore formation of numbness the doctor must be consulted immediately. Delay may lead to loss of the part due to nerve damage. Performing sun salutation everyday is very beneficial.
Diabetic patients must have a very small meal 30 minutes before exercise routine. This does not allow sudden sugar level fluctuation. There are several biscuits and snacks available in the market made especially for diabetic patients. Before you start to consume these consult your physician.
