Dealing With Tinnitus
September 1, 2009
Tinnitus can occur at any age. It is a misconception that tinnitus is confined only to the elderly people. It has also been found to occur in kids. Tinnitus occurs when the microscopic hair present on the auditory cells of the inner ear get damaged due to persistent stress, etc.
Role of Diet
Go low on salt consumption. Get yourself checked for Meniere`s disease. Those who suffer from Meniere`s may develop tinnitus. This disease causes accumulation of fluids in the ears. It may lead to deafness. Patients of this disease must consume less salt. Caffeine naturally constricts blood vessels and raises the pressure of the blood temporarily. This can increase the sound of tinnitus. Nicotine present in cigarettes and cigars has similar effect as caffeine.
Care
Avoid loud noise. If you are standing about two meters away from someone and you have to talk louder than usual then environmental noise is much higher than the normal. Avoid such surroundings.
If avoiding such surrounding is inevitable then use ear plugs as often as you can. These are easily available in the pharmacy store. The ear plugs available in the music stores also work well. An alternative to ear plus is use of ear defenders. These are often form-filled and completely block all type of noise. They may make you feel sweaty and hot but they will save your ears from noise pollution. Best home remedy is to give your ears a rest.
When the sound is really loud humming may help you. This simple technique can be used by people working with loud music, while using a powerful tool at work, etc. The role of humming is to stimulate the inner ears to make tiny bones of the ear shrink. This prevents the outer sounds waves to pass through.
If your hair are long and thick they can be used to cover your ears. People suffering from tinnitus often find it difficult to sleep at night due to the sound. This is because of relative silence of the surrounding that makes the tinnitus sound more significant. Maintaining a little background sound like that of radio or television with low volume may be helpful.
