Dealing With Morning Sickness

Signs of morning sickness become visible by the fourth week and usually fade off by the sixth week. Here are some simple ways to deal with morning sickness.In case the condition continues even after six weeks of pregnancy or chronic vomiting and nausea is being experienced then consult the physician immediately as you may be suffering from hypermesis gravidarum.

Basic Dos and Don`ts

Avoid foods like refined carbohydrates, sugars, spices, alcohol and caffeine that will trigger or aggravate the nausea and vomiting.

Eat small but frequent meals. Do skip meals. Drink plenty of water, especially if you are vomiting a lot. Use of strong smelling products such as cleaning products and perfumes must be avoided since they may trigger nausea.

Pollution generated from engine oils may make the nausea worse. Pregnancy makes the body of the women more sensitive to smells.

Sleep on time and avoid exhausting yourself. Do not wear tight clothes near the abdomen or the chest area.

Being pregnant does not mean you need to give-up on exercise. Go for long but slow walks. Certain yoga and aerobic exercises help in maintaining good health and hence avoid morning sickness.

Food Habits

Drink enough water and juices to restore balance of electrolytes in body which are lost due to vomiting. Eat healthy snacks like oat or rye crackers.

Water melon, musk melon and banana shakes are good for digestive system. Musk melon and water melon help in neutralizing the acids. Coconut water is equally helpful.

Eat foods that are less spicy and have been cooked well. Include 4 to 5 servings of fruits as part of daily meals to cover vitamin and mineral requirement.

Foods that are rich source of vitamin B6, vitamin K vitamin C and magnesium must be consumed daily. Vitamin B6 has anti-nausea effects and hence aids in getting relief from morning sickness.

Supper foods like brown rice, almonds hazel nuts, lemon grass, spinach, mangoes, broccoli and lettuce must be included daily. They are rich source of several vitamins and minerals.

Though fennel water and ginger have anti-nausea effects they must not be consumed in heavy doses, especially ginger.

It is important to consult the gynecologist before starting with any supplements.
