Computers: Health Problems and Solutions
November 18, 2009
Computer has become more of a health in these recent years. There are characteristic symptoms of computer related stress and their solutions.
Symptoms
Change in number of glasses (decrease in eye power), blurred vision, doubling of vision and dry eyes are primary symptoms. Other symptoms include frequent pain in neck and back area. The person is unable to see distant objects clearly due to constant work on the computer.
Serious Problems
Eye diseases, bad posture and painful hands are the significant problems occurring due to over use of computers. These problems often take a permanent shape. Raised height of the screen and use of wrong time of glasses worsen the condition.
Glaucoma is a common eye disease due to computers. Long periods tend to make the neck stiff. Recent research shows that carpel tunnel syndrome is more frequent with people who work on computers for several hours together.
Prevention
Keep your elbow on the mouse at 90 degree to the back. Always keep your back straight. The viewing angle must not exceed 20 degrees from the middle of the screen. Adjust the screen accordingly. Also, you must maintain a distance of about 50 to 60 centimeters from the screen in order to put least stain on the eyes and the neck.
Frequent breaks are very important. Experts suggest that break of 5 to 10 minutes must be taken every hour or so. Even while working on computer, try to blink 2-3 times once in every 15 seconds. This will improve circulation and prevent drying-up of the eyes.
During the break palming and blinking can be done. Rub your palms against each other to produce heat. Apply this heat to your eyes by placing the palms on the closed eyes. Do this 5-6 times. This is called palming.
Make sure that the brightness and the screen contrast is not making your eyes uncomfortable. This is a major cause of frequent headaches.
Try to sit in a dark area for few minutes every day. The blackness that you will be able to see after your closed eyes will give an idea how relaxed your eyes are.
Use of a daily eye tonic is highly recommended for those who regularly work on computer for long hours.
