Computer Vision Syndrome

September 17, 2009

Constant staring at the computer for more than two hours may cause development of computer vision syndrome. In other words, the eyes become very strained. The eyes can not tolerate so much direct illumination.

Common symptoms of computer vision syndrome are frequent headaches, blurred vision and dry eyes. Here are a few tips on what can be done.

Try using impact-resistant glasses instead of your regular glasses. If your eye vision is perfectly healthy, still wear zero power impact-resistant glasses. It is very important that you pay attention to the lightening of the room in which you are working.

The light should come from backside or from top. It should neither be from front, left or right. The eyes need enough contrast as well. In absence of good quality contrast the eye get strained.

Wear glasses of correct power. Tell your ophthalmologist about your work. Often, glasses of least power are asked to be made. Darken your computer screen. This will increase the contract and put less strain on eyes.

Take frequent breaks from the work. Every hour, blink your eyes rapidly for 10-15 seconds. This will instantly improve circulation in the eyes.

You may rest your eyes by simply closing them for a few minutes or splashing fresh water. A simple yoga technique can simply make your eyes feel fresh. For this, rub your hands against each other until they are warm. Apply the warm immediately to the closed eyes.

You may close your eyes and roll them clockwise and anticlockwise. Placing cold tea bags on eyes at the end of the day simply makes them feel better.

Things to Know

If one has had a history of any eye condition such as cataract or glaucoma then eye strain must be taken seriously. People suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid disease, colitis, some form of arthritis, AIDS and migraine are at a greater risk of developing eye strain more easily than the rest of the population.

Some of the drugs used in treatment of prostate problems and urinary retention may also increase the risk. Common tranquilizers, oral contraceptives and anti-inflammatory drugs have shown to increase stress in the eyes.
