Colic In Babies
Many times we are not able to understand the reason for which the baby cries. The most common and frequent reason for such an event is the sharp and frequent cramps or pain in the stomach, which are the symptoms of colic.
Causes
There are various causes for colic to happen. Firstly, the digestive system of the babies is not fully matured and it does not know how to process the food. This can be the reason in the first few months.
Sometimes, the lactating mother may eat something that makes gas in her body and this is passed to the baby while feeding. Also, the babies commonly swallow air along with the milk, which results in colic.
Diagnosis
When the baby is crying due to colic, he must be crying for long period even after making great efforts to relieve him and this usually occurs after feeding. Babies would have hard stomach and they must be pulling leg towards the stomach and also have an arched back during the colic.
Prevention
Babies are affected the most during the first six months by the colic in the stomach. If you use bottle for the feed, make sure to sterilize the bottle. Use boiled and then cooled water for the powdered feed.
To avoid colic in your baby’s, never overfeed the baby and the feeding mother should not eat products that cause gas in the body. Never give juices to the baby, as they can be harmful.
Young children also face this problem due to wrong eating habits. Look at your child and do not let him eat more of junk food. Ask them to drink plenty of water as this helps in getting rid of the extra toxins in the body by urinating.
Management
When you feel that the baby is crying due to colic then fold his legs in such a way that his stomach is pressed, which helps to release the gas from the stomach. You can make the baby lie on the stomach, as this puts the pressure on the stomach and extra air gets passed out.
After every feed make your child burp. Sometimes putting a warm water bottle on the baby’s stomach can also be helpful aid.
Some medicines are also present for colic aid. Consult your doctor and give the medicine when required.
