Cleaning Ear Wax Safely

June 10, 2009

Ear wax is a natural and sticky substance that is secreted in our ear. This waxy substance is yellowish in color and does many beneficial things than we can even think of. But yet, many people are of the opinion that the ear wax should be completely removed as it is not hygienic. Well, I don’t know about its connection with hygiene, but what I know is that it is better to keep the ear wax as it is until it does not harm us.

Our body produces the ear wax to protect the skin of ear canal. This wax also cleans and lubricates the ear passage and provides protection to the ear canal from bacteria, water and other infections. When the amount of wax in the ear becomes so much that it disables the hearing capacity or causes ear ache, then it should be cleaned.

There are many ways to clean the ear wax, with usage of ear buds being the most popular option. But using the ear buds can do more harm than good as constant twisting of the bud can push the wax deeper into the ear blocking the eardrum. Therefore, utmost care should be taken while using the ear buds and the wax should be removed by staying at the outer surface only.

Another method of removing the wax from ears is by putting a few drops of warm baby oil in the ears. The warm oil liquidities the semi solid wax and allows it to come out on its own. And the presence of baby oil does not harm the sensitive eardrum. Using special ear drops is another safe way to remove the ear wax. The special ingredient in the eardrops softens the wax and makes it easy for removal. Do not try to use any sharp objects in removing the wax as it can puncture the ear drum.

The best way to keep your ears safe and healthy is by not even touching the ear wax. If its existence compromises your hearing or causes any infection, then only use the above methods for safe removal. If you are not sure about dealing with this condition, refer a medical professional as he will assist you in safely removing the ear wax.
