Causes of Vertigo

Vertigo is a type of dizziness i.e. sometimes it can be felt that the earth is spinning around or something is moving. It is a common problem in the patients that have inner ear ailments or some problem in the brain.

It is not harmful but can be so if accompanied with other symptoms such as problem in speaking, double vision, problem in walking, hearing loss or severe headache.

Causes

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (or BPPV) is a major cause of vertigo. This condition is usually caused by the infection in the upper respiratory tract. In this, vertigo occurs when the head is moved up and down or to and fro. But it vanishes away in seconds.

But sometimes, the patient can experience it for some days also and may be accompanied by vomiting and involuntary eye movements. The exact cause is not known but the patient may have a history of head trauma or ear infection.

Other commonly encountered cause of vertigo is Meniere’s disease, which is characterized by vertigo along with hearing loss and tinnitus (ringing in ears). In this, the onset of vertigo is sudden and lasts from few minutes to maximum a day.

Other causes include labyrinthitis, syphilis, acoustic neuroma, cerebellar disease, multiple sclerosis or even epilepsy. Sometimes, the cause may be psychogenic also.

When to see a doctor?

You must see a doctor when you have severe headache, hearing loss, blurred vision, weakness in legs and arms, fainting, changes in the heartbeat or have any problem in walking.

Simple home remedies

Some simple things you can do at home in the beginning stages that can help to reduce the problem. Soak some watermelon seeds, almonds and whole-wheat grain in water and make a paste out of it. Then fry two cloves in some pure butter and mix in the paste. Mix the whole paste in milk and drink once in a day and see the results.

When you get up from the bed, never do it with a jerk, turn a side and slowly get up. Drink 3-4 glasses of cold water in a day if you suffer from the problem of vertigo.

An easy way to get rid from the condition is to add lime, salt and black pepper in the water and drink; it would make you feel good in no time.
