Care During Periods
Periods take 3 to 7 days to clear up and it is this time when most women feel tortured by their body. Yet, there are many women for whom these days are just like any other day. Know how to take care of yourself during periods.Food Habits
Correct food choices during menses are important is many ways. Since the body is warm during periods one must not consume such foods that are cooling in nature. Also, such foods that will aggravate the heat of the body should not to be consumed. It is important to maintain balance of temperature of the body else excess bleeding and cramps may occur.
Foods that are cooling in nature include raw onions, bananas, radish, cucumber, yogurt and yogurt based drinks. Do not drink chilled water.
Foods that disturb temperature of the body include dates, grain alcohol and nuts like walnut and almonds. Too much of coffee may increase pain and cause heavier bleeding than normal.
Due to hormonal changes, there is an increased craving for extra sugary/salty foods. Avoid following these craving. Eat a balanced diet which is rich in proteins, fiber and antioxidants.
Dealing with Cramps
Try to eat a small piece of dark chocolate during periods. It is said to reduce abdominal pain and helps in alleviating mood.
Take half tbsp of ajwain and consume it with some warm water. It helps in reducing the discomfort. Drink herbal teas. Basil tea, ashwagandha, rosemary and lavender are good options. They help in reducing irritability which is common during periods.
Do not skip meals. The body is already in discomfort. Any form of pressure will worsen the condition. Take proper sleep and avoid stress.
Importance of Exercise and Hygiene
Exercises during periods consist of long but slow walks, yoga and breathing exercises. Exercises boost production of endorphins, the natural painkillers in the body. Jerky movements must be avoided during periods. Do not climb too many stairs during these days.
Hygiene plays a great role in maintaining optimal health of the body. Change pad within 5 hours of use. Tampons must be changed within 8 hours. Wash the area once daily with soap solution.
Wear only cotton inner wear. This ensures vaginal health and avoids possibilities of any infection.
