Bump on Big Toe: Bunion

A bunion is a foot deformity in which a bump appears on the side of the big toe. In this situation the big toe leans towards the second toe rather than pointing straight. This disturbs the ligaments of the bone causing bunion.

Symptoms

The symptoms appear very late for bunion and some people do not show any sign of bunion. At the first go, only the shape of the big toe changes and later on a bump is formed.

Some common symptoms could be redness on the site followed by inflammation, pain, numbness and sometimes burning sensation may also be present.

Causes

Sometimes ingrown toe nail, restricted motion of the toe and wearing tight shoes could be the reasons for the same. Women are mainly at higher risk of developing a bunion because they wear unsuitable footwear. But these are genetic also. People who wear normal shoes can also develop this as in them it happens genetically.

Management

Persons suffering from this should wear comfortable shoes (not meaning orthopedic) but any shoes which gives the toe wider space.

Surgery is not the best treatment for bunions. As with the surgery you could only get relieved of the pain. The shape of the foot does not get corrected. And also the width of the feet is also decreased. If you are suffering from various problems with bunions then only you need to opt for surgery. Surgery is not always successful.

One should try to treat the bunion without surgery. Try wearing normal shoes by which you could walk easily. Do not walk too much. Take rest as by this you can reduce the pain. Applying a cold pack can also give you some relief. Some stretching exercises can also be done to relieve the tension on the inner part of the bunion. Some pain killer can also be taken to get relief from pain.
