Billing method or the ovulation method is a natural way of contraception for women. The method is simple to use once it is understood properly. Many women gain expertise in this method with time and hence may completely rely on it.
How Does it Work?
The method revolves around studying the vaginal discharge, cervical mucus, which is a major conception component. There is a complete cycle for formation of this mucus and its presence near the vulva.
In a female, the ovulation occurs once per monthly cycle. The ovum (egg) thus released stays alive for not more than 24 hours. As the time to ovulate comes near, the cervical mucus will start appearing in more quantity around the vulva.
Cervical mucus is of white color and forms egg-white like consistency at the peak of ovulation. At this time, the cervical mucus becomes stickier and thick. This fluid helps the sperm to survive and reach inside the uterus so as to cause fertilization.
Ovulation occurs 2 weeks before the monthly periods. Once the period is over, the vagina tends to feel dry again. This is how the complete cycle occurs.
This is the best time for women who wish to conceive. So, this is the time when sexual intercourse needs to be avoided keeping contraception in mind.
Using the Method
The discharge of the mucus can be felt with sensation of the vulva. The best way to examine the consistency of the mucus is by feeling your vulva and taking out the fluid on the fingers. Try to stretch it between your thumb and finger tips. If it appears stretched for 2.5 to 3 inches then the mucus is most fertile.
Your vagina will be slippery enough to assist the penis to insert and allow sperms to swim across to the uterus. This is the time you know you need to avoid the intercourse.
Advantages
The method is helpful for women who do not have a regular monthly cycle. They can simply check the consistency of the mucus and make the decision.
Although this method does not provide prevention against STDS but it is safe enough for women who are seeking a natural contraception method after childbirth or during pre-menopausal state.
