Ayurvedic Treatment for Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is found commonly in women than in men. Aggravation of the vata, pita and kapha levels leads to poisoning of blood. This condition leads to rheumatoid arthritis, according to ayurveda.

Unhealthy food habits, daily intake of hard-to-digest meat, alcohol, lack of sleep, lack of exercises, over-use of curd, chillies, tamarind, salt, horse gram, black gram etc. can aggravate the level of vata and also poisoning of blood.

Primary symptoms of the conditions include inflammation and pain in the joints, reddishness of skin etc. Joints of hands and legs get affected in the earlier stages and later it spreads to the other joints of the body. Uric acid deposition in these joints can result in disfiguration also, if not properly treated.

Treatment

Blood purification and balancing of vata is the first step taken in the ayurvedic treatment for rheumatoid arthritis. Castor oil with milk taken in an empty stomach helps to reduce vata. This is also effective in removing toxins from the body.

Tinospora cordifolia is a medicinal herb used by ayurvedic practitioners to treat rheumatoid arthritis. It is an active ingredient of all ayurvedic preparations to treat this disease. Tinospora decoction taken along with milk is a simple remedy to cure rheumatoid arthritis.

There are so many Ayurvedic preparations like pellets, decoctions and oils to treat rheumatoid arthritis and the treatments differ according to the type of the body and nature of the disease.

Proper diet has to be strictly followed during treatment. Whole wheat, brown rice, green gram, elephant yam, banana, buttermilk, milk, ghee, fruits, bitter gourd, ash gourd, cucumbers, snake gourd, leafy greens, etc.

Are included in the diet. Fish, meat, eggs, fried food items, curd, black gram, spicy foods, chillies, tamarind, salt etc. are some food items that are strictly prohibited during this treatment. Rheumatoid arthritis patients are also advised to do walking daily to ward off obesity

Methods of Prevention

Ayurveda prescribes healthy food habits and regular exercises to prevent the onset of rheumatoid arthritis. Abhyanga snana is also helpful in preventing this disease.

Intake of castor oil once in a month helps in purifying blood. This helps to remove undigested residue from the digestive system and will also help to keep vata under control. Further it is said that food intake should be limited to twice a day. Also, take food only when hungry.

Ayurvedic texts also insist that yoga and meditation should be practiced to gain control over anger and anxiety that can poison both blood and body.
