Avoid Sun Tan

May 20, 2009

Exposure to direct sunlight has been known to cure many ailments as it triggers the skin to produce Vitamin D. Those who are Vitamin D deficient are advised to sunbath.

But excessive exposure to direct sunlight can cause tanning which can have detrimental health effects leading to skin cancer. So it is very important to understand the fine line between sunbathing and sun tanning.

You can easily sunbath at any place, be it a beach, or terrace or your garden. But while sunbathing, you need to be very careful that you do not over expose your skin as it may cause tanning. So how does one accomplish a healthy sunbath and at the same time avoid getting suntanned? Here are a few simple things to follow:

Always apply sunscreen lotion with a high SPF before sunbathing. This not only protects the skin cells from the strong sunrays but also helps in preventing tanning.

Apply the sunscreen generously to all parts of your body, specially face, neck, legs and arms. Also wear sunglasses and use hats if required or cover your face with a towel or a cloth as you won’t be able to bear the strong sunrays for a long time.

If you already have a tanned skin which you want to get rid of, then you can try these tips. Firstly, whenever you move outside, completely cover the affected parts of your body. Make a solution comprising of 4 tsp of sandalwood oil, 2 tsp of almond oil and 5 tsp of coconut oil and apply this solution to the affected body parts. Preparing a paste of turmeric, yoghurt and barley (all in equal quantities) and applying to the tanned area can help in reducing the tanned effect.

You may also apply fresh aloe-vera gel to affected areas and allow it to set for some time. Later on you can wash it off with plain water. Aloe-vera gel will reduce the darkness of the tan and provide a cooling sensation to the skin. Try using these tips while you are sunbathing and be completely sure that you only benefit while exposing in the sun.

I’m going to be a contrarian here. Sunbathing DOESN’T cause skin cancers. Actually it PREVENTS it.

We have been programed by Big Pharma to believe that sunning ourselves causes cancer. It’s not the full story.

    Here are the facts:
    1. There are 3 types of skin cancer. Melanoma is the deadly one and it’s not caused by sun exposure. The other two are squamous cell and basal cell. Although these are caused by the sun, they are rarely lethal.

    2. The Journal of the National Cancer Institute showed that it’s the people who have a tan and wrinkled skin who have the least to fear from melanoma.

    3. The further north you live the higher the risk of cancer. People in Ohio have more melanoma than in Florida. Also sunlight reduces your risk of breast, colon,, prostate and ovarian cancer.

Hope this will set the record straight. The sun is as natural as you can get. In fact sun screen prevents you from getting vitamin D3, because the wavelength of sunlight that produces D3 in our skin is shut out.
