Artificial Insemination Methods
December 23, 2009
Artificial insemination is the process by which the sperm is inserted in the reproductive system of the female artificially when the natural conception through sexual intercourse fails.
As per the case, the sperm donor is decided. If the husband is donating the sperm then it is called AIH (artificial insemination by husband). If the sperm is taken from someone else then it is called AID or artificial insemination by donor.
There are four ways in which the artificial insemination can be done. These have been discussed below.
Intrauterine Insemination
Success of IUI depends primarily on the fertility of the male and age of the women. The method does not work for those couples in which the female is suffering from ovarian failure or the male is not fertile or both.
This method does not work for the women after menopause. The sperm is inserted directly into the uterus.
Intravaginal Insemination
Intravaginal insemination is used not for the couples. It is the preferred option in case of a surrogate or in case of an anonymous sperm donor. The method inserts the sperm through the vagina.
It may be used even in case the male partner is unable to ejaculate during sexual intercourse. The procedure can be done at the comfort of your home.
Intracervical Insemination
This method is another option in case of a surrogate or anonymous sperm donor. Otherwise, if the woman is ovulating naturally then this is just the right method. In comparison to other methods this method is painless.
The cervical mucus is the key component in fertility. In this method the sperm is allowed to directly come in touch with cervix and hence increased chances of pregnancy.
Intratubular Insemination
This method is chosen once other methods fail. It is used for couples only. Women who have optimal cervical mucus yet inability to conceive is unexplained can benefit through this method.
ITI has been found to be helpful for couples suffering from ovulation problems and ejaculation dysfunction.
If one is trying to conceive since 1 year or more and fail then one should try for these fertility methods. It is advisable that herbal remedies may be tried before going for these artificial methods.
Being overweight, consumption of alcohol and habit of smoking significantly interrupt with natural methods of conception
