Did you know that one apple has more antioxidants that those present in 1500 mg of a vitamin C source? The quercetins present in apples makes it a powerful antioxidant.

The Society of Neuroscience had revealed during the annual conference in 2006 how antioxidants present in apples were able to reduce cellular death of the neurons due to inflammation and oxidation. The phytochemicals present in apples fight free radials in the body and thus help in preventing pre-mature aging and many types of cancer.

It has been found that people who regularly eat apples have 16 percent lower levels of LDL cholesterol than those who do not eat them.

Many researchers found that naringin, quercetins and flavanoids present in apples decrease chances of development for lung cancer by 50 percent. The findings were based on the observation conducted on ten thousand people.

Based on a study at Cornell University, it has been found that the quercetins help in protecting brain cells against development of Alzheimer’s disease. The study was conducted on mice.

Also, as per another study at Cornell University,  eating an apple everyday reduces risk of breast cancer by 17 percent. The experiment was done on rats. Interestingly, those rats that were fed three apples in a day showed the risk to be reduced by 39 percent.

Apples play an important role in asthma development. It has been found that children born to those women who frequently eat apples or drink apples juice during pregnancy had lower chances to develop asthma. Also, those children who frequently consumed apple juice showed less suffering from asthma than those who drank just once in a month. So, here is another reason to chew into the juicy fruit or sip its juice often.

Apples help in weight loss. The fruit contains no fat, no cholesterol and no sodium. One apple has equal amount of dietary fiber as in a bowl of bran cereal. As per a Brazilian study, women who eat apples while dieting lose more weight than those who do not eat any fruit during dieting.

The pectin present in apples provides galacturonic acid to the body which decreases body`s demand of insulin need to lower down blood sugar levels. Thus, it may be helpful in management of diabetes.
