All About Jock Itch

Jock itch is the name given to the inflammation on the skin of the groin. The inflammation is caused due to several factors. It is easy to prevent it and treatment is also available.

Causes of Jock Itch

Jock itch may be caused by mechanical irritation, contact with bacteria while using public toilets and presence of excess moisture and warmth in the groin region. Excess heat in the region creates perfect place for bacteria and yeast to multiply and cause infection. Wearing tight garments may lead to friction in groin folds. Also, the sweat tends to get trapped in the tight undergarments to cause itching.

Skin infection due to Candida albcans, Trichpphyton and Epidetmophyton floccosum may also cause jock itch. Excess exercise, weak immune system, occurrence of athlete`s foot and ringworm anywhere on body increase the tendency of jock itch.

Who May Get it?

Person suffering from HIV.AIDS, cancer, hepatitis or diabetes is at higher risk of developing jock itching form of chronic illness in which the immune system is seriously affected may cause jock itch. Also, people eating drugs used to modify the immune system are at a higher risk for the inflammation. Examples of these drugs are infliximab and etanercept.

Diagnostic Test

Jock itch can be confirmed by taking either a skin culture test or a skin lesion biopsy.

Treatment and Natural Remedies

One simple treatment is to use anti-fungal creams containing cltorimazole and miconazole. First, wash the area with an ant-bacterial soap and water and peel out any dry skin which can be easily removed. Apply the cream not just on the inflamed are but also little beyond the visible circumference of the effected area.

Even if you observe visible reduction in the inflammation do not stop using the medication before the medication tenure as directed on the label of the cream. In case the symptom persistent for more than 2 weeks then please consult your physician.

Likewise, you can use these creams to treat ringworm and athlete`s foot.

Preventing Jock itch

Always keep the groin area clean and dry. Wear comfortable undergarments and other clothing to let the air pass through easily. Application of talcum powder helps in keeping the area dry.
