Abnormal Vaginal Discharge

Many women ignore abnormal vaginal discharge. These are often sign of something more or less serious. Here is what every woman should know.

Types of Abnormal Vaginal Discharge

There are 6 major types of abnormal discharges from vagina. We take them one by one with them cause and symptoms. Brown or black colored discharge may occur due to delayed periods, irregular menstruation or cancer of endometrium or cervix. The discharge is accompanied by unbearable pain in pelvic region and irregular vaginal bleeding.

Yellow colored discharge may be due to development of gonorrhea. It is accompanied by painful micturation and bleeding between periods.

If the discharge is yellowish white or grey in colored and has a fishy odor is may suggest bacterial infection in vagina.  Extreme itching, swelling and redness in vagina are observed.

Possibility of yeast infection may be suggested by thick white cheesy discharge. Symptoms also include painful sexual intercourse, swelling around the vulva and itching.

A pink discharge is often seen (and is normal) after child birth. It signifies shedding of the uterine lining once the delivery of the baby is done.

Significant Causes

The most common cause of abnormal vagina discharge in many women is due to some or the other infection. These include Candidacies, bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis.

Discharge may also occur due to some irritation. The irritant could be some medication, soap, food or a certain type of clothing.

Prevention

Try not to wear colored underwear very often. Wearing white cotton panties will greatly reduce your risk of development of any sort of infection or irritation. Also, try wearing comfortable panties; neither too tight nor too lose.

Never use oils (especially sesame seed oil) or petroleum jerry to lubricate the vagina. These cause irritation and their effect may last for long even after thorough washing.

After passing stools or urine always wipe from front to backwards. The practice is often done in reverse manner. This is yet another major cause of infection.

Do not have sexual intercourse during your treatment. If you can not avoid it use condoms. Every vaginal discharge will bring ample amount of itching with it. But remember not to do itching. The vaginal lining is very fragile and may get damaged. Also, it worsens the condition.
