7 Home Remedies For Mosquito Bites

Mosquitoes bite us all the time. We most often do not bother and just leave it in its course after scratching for a few minutes. Mosquito borne diseases always affect others, not me!

But all are not lucky and some of them do fall for diseases and infections of the skin after a mosquito bite. Though we cannot do anything much in the case of a mosquito borne disease, we can do a lot to prevent skin infections through mosquito bites.

Here are some natural ways to prevent mosquito bite infections. These natural methods make sure that you do not allow the bacteria to enter the skin and cause secondary skin infections and diseases.

1. Water and Soap

When you are bitten by a mosquito, no one ever bothers to wash the area, let alone with soap and water.  Washing with soap and water will prevent any bacteria on the surface from causing problems later on. This will not however be a solution for preventing mosquito borne diseases. Washing or taking a bath will however help you to remove any chance of infection on the bitten skin.

2. Ice Cubes

Mosquito bites sometimes swell and cause itching. To stop the itch and swelling from developing on the skin, due to the action of histamines, you can immediately apply an ice pack which will mask the sting as well as any itching that you might feel.

3. Ammonia

The ammonia that you use for household purposes can be used for stopping the allergy that is associated with mosquito bites. Soon after the mosquito bite, you can apply ammonia on the surface after washing with water. This will prevent infections and allergies associated with the mosquito bite. Wash it off after 10-15 minutes when the itch subsides.

4. Toothpaste

Application of toothpaste is another great way to mask the skin from swelling and also to prevent you from scratching uncontrollably. Take any toothpaste, if it is mint, the better, and apply on the affected skin. Leave until it is dry and until the infection weans off.

5. Calamine

Calamine lotion is a wonderful remedy for treating all kinds of itchiness that is related to insect bites. Take some calamine lotion and apply on the mosquito bite. Let the lotion air dry on the skin.

Leave it on for as much time as you want. You may wash it off when the itching subsides. This is the best way to prevent your skin from peeling due to scratching.

6. Bar of Soap

Rubbing a bar of soap can do two things; removing the bacterial action with the detergents and also removing the action of histamines that cause swelling and itching on the skin. Bar soap has to be used immediately after the mosquito bite, well before the action of histamine takes place.

7. Salt

Salt is also a great antibacterial. Take some salt and mix with water. Apply on the mosquito bite if it is one or two bites. For larger areas, salt water can be used for rinsing the skin. Take a cup of water and add a teaspoon of salt with it. Wash thoroughly to remove all the germs on the skin. Allow it to air dry.
