5 Strangest Diseases in the World

June 25, 2009

There are certain diseases in the medical world which are still a mystery. There are no exact details to explain their existence. Here are 5 such syndromes which are very surprising.

Moebius syndrome is a syndrome in which the patient lacks development of one or more facial nerves and hence may not be able to give even simplest of facial expressions like a smile or a frown. Apparently, 300 children in Europe have been discovered to have this syndrome. Certain people may even sleep with their eyes open.

The urban legend of the Werewolves may be nothing more than medical problem by the name of Werewolf syndrome. Also called as Hypertrichosis, the signs and symptoms include excess growth of hair all over the body to resemble a wolf. The most probable cause of this syndrome is thought to be due to some gene mutation. Some researchers believe that consumption of certain drugs and some metabolic disorders may also lead to Werewolf syndrome. It is often found to be an inherited disease.

Walking Corpse syndrome or the Cotard delusion is characterized by the assumption by a person that they are already dead and hence behave like one. The patients feel that they have lost their internal organs and maintain that they are no longer alive since they don`t feel their body. The disease is said to occur due to severe brain damage. But the physiology remains unexplained.

Alice in wonderland syndrome has nothing entertaining to offer. The syndrome makes the patient view things either too small or too large of their existing size. The case in which the patient views objects smaller than their actual size is called micropsia. The condition in which larger are seen is called macropsia. The syndrome is a temporary state and often associated with migraine attacks.

An interesting disease is Pica. In this the patient has an uncontrollable urge to eat un-edible objects like paint, dirt, laundry detergent or rocks. There is no explanation for the cause of Pica but it is found to be more popular in children and women with a very low income source.
